ViParc Participation in World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2018

The fourth World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) from 12-18 November 2018 has been celebrated with several activities in Vietnam. A ‘Seminar On Containment Of Antimicrobial Resistance For The Veterinary Education Establishments’ was held on 16 November in Nong Lam University (NLU), organized by the Department of Animal Health, OIE, FAO and NLU. The seminar included the participation of universities teaching animal sciences and veterinary medicine in Vietnam. The aims of this seminar was to step up efforts to promote awareness on responsible antibiotic use in animal production among future veterinarians and animal health workers graduating at Vietnamese universities.
Researchers from the ViParc project were invited to participate, and share some of the experiences from field veterinarians. The presentation was delivered by Mr. Bach Tuan Kiet, Project Vet affiliated to the Sub-Department of Animal Health and Production in Dong Thap province.
In his presentation, Mr. Kiet focused on describing the real challenges faced by field veterinarians to persuade farmers to reduce AMU. Since ViParc team has been implementing practical interventions aimed to help farmers prevent diseases, improve productivity. Of particular importance is to discourage the use of prophylactic antibiotics in the absence of disease to farmers.
