Advanced Training Course on Poultry Disease Diagnostics
Dong Thap, Vietnam, 16-20 October 2017
University of Chulalongkorn’s Professor Niwat Chansiripornchai led an advanced training course on poultry disease diagnostics in Dong Thap from 16-20 October.
Under his supervision, three ViParc project vets visited five “problem” farms with chicken flocks experiencing severe disease, in order to conduct diagnostic investigations. The project vets visited the farms to collect information on the characteristics of the flock, the disease episode, as well as on farming practices (vaccination, past history of disease, etc.). Back in the laboratory, they discussed this information, and carried out a diagnostic post-mortem and collected samples that were investigated for a range of agents, using molecular tests (RT-PCR) and agar media to isolate a range of potential bacterial pathogens, including E. coli, typhoid Salmonella, Ornitobacterium rhinotracheale, Avibacterium gallinarum and Pasteurella multocida). The project vets also worked with ViParc’s laboratory staff to identify potential causes of diseases and recommend specific treatments for each farm.
This course was organized in an effort to build capacity for the Dong Thap Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, some officials of which will take the role of advising ViParc farms during the project’s intervention phase – scheduled to commence in March 2018.
